There is something very basic — even primal — about staring into a campfire and contemplating your place in the universe. Humans have been sitting around campfires and looking into them, perhaps for spiritual purposes or simply comfort, for as long as humans have been making campfires.

Watching a fire is still one of my favorite things to do when I’m in camp. It is mesmerizing to watch the flames and look deep into the embers as colors of the fire dance through them. If you like a lot of color in your campfire, check out this little trick:
The first thing you will need is a foot-long piece of copper tubing that is 1- to 1½-inch in diameter. You can probably go to your local hardware store and buy a one-foot piece of copper tubing. Big box retailers have the tubing, but you have to buy a 10-foot section. It would be better and cheaper if you knew a plumber.
When you have your copper tubing, you will need an old garden hose. I think almost everyone has a garden hose that needs to be updated. It seems like I have to buy a couple new hoses each spring.

Once you see this trick work, you will probably need a piece of copper tubing and enough garden hose pieces for each person in camp. No one will want to be left out of the fun.
Cut the garden hose up into one foot pieces that will fit inside the copper tubing. Insert that piece of garden hose into your copper tube. Once it is dark in your next camp, build yourself a nice campfire. It doesn’t have to be a bonfire. Don’t be in a big hurry either; let the fire get going. You want to have good flames and lots of embers glowing at the base of the fire before beginning your experiment.
Once your campfire is established and going well, take your copper tube, loaded with the garden hose remnant, and toss it into the center of the fire at the base. What you will witness is a bit of fire science and a pretty impressive small-scale light show.
The Perfect Witness
As the fire heats up the copper tube, the garden hose tries to burn as well. However, being encased in the copper tube, the materials in the garden hose can’t get beyond the smoldering/melting stage inside the tube. There is not enough oxygen inside the copper tube to burn the amount of combustible materials and gasses being produced by the decomposition of the garden hose.
To provide a simple explanation, here’s what happens: Gasses and volatile materials from the garden hose are breaking down in the heat and separating into their individual forms. Only when these gasses get to the end of the copper tube, out where there is sufficient oxygen, do they actually burn. Solid materials atomize and gasses vent from the tube and into the fire. Each of the components of the garden hose burns with a different “signature” which we see as visible light.
All this happens in mere seconds, but the result is impressive. It is like a mini gas chromatograph. A normal fire has reds, yellows, oranges and often tints of blue when it burns. With this copper tube/garden hose trick you will see greens, purples, pinks, violets and deep blues. I think you will be impressed. Give it a try.
