This Pokemon Tattoo is Taking the Internet by Storm You Wont Believe What Happens Next

Pokemon Tattoo

This awful Pokemon tattoo is taking over the Internet Nothing can prepare you for how ugly this hand-drawn Pokemon tattoo really is.

It all began with a post from redditor Yellwsnow2, captioned, “My friend was drunk and on Xanax when he decided to tattoo a black face Charmander with no experience or artistic ability. The flame saves it.”

This

The tattoo doesn’t remotely resemble the Pokemon in question, to such an awe-inspiring degree of hideousness that Reddit turned it into a meme. Within 24 hours, this misshapen Charmander drawing has inspired customized water bottles, jewelry, fanart, and a suspicious amount of merchandise.

Shitty Charmander: Dieses Pokemon Tattoo Erobert Das Internet

A quick scroll through Reddit shows the meme hopelessly spiraling out of control, beginning with digitized copies of the tattoo and quickly evolving into T-shirts and… hoodies with photos of the t-shirts on them.

For some inexplicable reason, people are actually bidding on eBay for a polymer clay necklace of the so-called “shartmander.” Reddit, you are officially out of control.

According to the person who posted the original photo, the tattoo’s backstory is a PSA on why you shouldn’t mix booze and Xanax: “He woke up the next morning and asked his friend why he didn’t stop him. His friend said he tried multiple times.” So, exactly what you’d expect from a mutant Pokemon tattoo someone gave themselves while drunk and high, then.

Somewhere in this ridiculous story, there’s room for a joke about redditors having too much time on their hands. But in the end, isn’t creativity its own reward?

Update 2:35pm CT, April 16: The shartmander tattoo is evidently based off of a Tim Burton-style Charmander illustration by artist Vaughn Pinpin, also known as Hat Boy.

Elsewhere, she co-hosts the pop culture podcast Overinvested. Follow her on Twitter: @Hello_TailoYesterday, a Pokémon-themed thread popped up on Reddit. It was titled “My friend was drunk and on Xanax when he decided to tattoo a black face Charmander with no experience or artistic ability. The flame saves it.”

Insanely Geeky Tattoos

Comparing the two, the tattoo is not exactly the most faithful recreation. But given the circumstances? I’ll say that the guy’s tattoo isn’t half bad.

Shitty

The poster of the Reddit thread claims that the guy in the image woke up the morning after the tattoo and asked his friend why he didn’t try to stop him from getting the Charmander tattoo. Turns out, the friend tried “multiple times” to no avail.

Just the same, the internet has fully embraced the guy’s rendition of Charmander, with many lovingly calling it Shartmander. In response to the original Shartmander, there are a number of funny images and memes floating around, all of which celebrate the guy’s tatoo. The initial image in this post, for example, was created by wowdracarys.

That said, the rendition of BELIEVE IN YOURSELF Charmander is partially influenced by the tattoo, and partially influenced by the artwork of Vaughn Pinpin, who drew a Tim-Burton style Charmander back in 2012:

The tattoo has some similarities, yeah? It’s easy to see why the Charmander jokes floating around right now mash together the guy’s tattoo and Pinpin’s Burton Charmander.

The

Curiously, a number of people are trying to capitalise on the meme by selling things such as T-Shirts and other miscellaneous items that have the Shartmander printed on them. This is occurring in spite of the fact that many of the images take heavy inspiration from the work of Pinpin, who is often not even credited as inspiration. Additionally, judging from Pinpin’s Twitter feed, they seem to feel that many of the jokes surrounding Shartmander are akin to “laughing with the school bully when the joke was punching me in the face.” I don’t think everyone’s jabs at the Charmander are mean-spirited, but it’s hard to say. Regardless, the Charmander is kind of everywhere right now. Here is some news that should surprise no one: We all do regrettable things while drunk. Once we've hit the sauce hard enough, most of do things that our friends may find hilarious at the time and forever afterward. Unfortunately, I feel like I hold pretty tame and unimpressive Drunken Mistake trophies like Attempted To Make DIY Cat Toys or Burned French Fries But Ate Them Anyway. This guy who gave himself a Charmander tattoo while drunk (and stoned on Xanax because he was really going for the gold that night) blows everything I did out of the water. The poor dude's friend shared it on Reddit, and other humans relate so much to this all-black, flaming-tailed Pokémon tattoo catastrophe that it's almost effectively and fully taken over the internet. (For reference, please recall when that Pokémon-obsessed goldfish threatened a similar takeover—this is like that, but times 11.)

Top 10 Worst Pokemon Tattoos Ever, Ranked

The DIY tattoo, lovingly now referred to as Shartmander, takes Charmander's original orange, adorable dinosaur design and flips it on its proverbial head, depicting him all in black with hurried line and filling work. It is now inspiring hoards of people with photo editing and other creative abilities (and not a whole lot of professional or life obligations, maybe) to transform the bad idea tattoo into various new mediums. Really, if only this 27-year-old dude now sporting a stylized Pokemon monster on his hip for the rest of his life knew what he'd inspire when he started drinking that fateful evening. Here he is, showing his new ink:

Orange, jovial, seemingly intact—you get the idea. The tattoo version, though, is...not. The similarities start with the dragon-like form and end with the lit tail. That's it. Anyway, the popularity of this horrible tattoo basically exploded. Some of the new mediums in which it appears includes:

Jokes, memes, and internet sensations aside, I gotta make a PSA: mixing booze and benzos is a bad idea. Among various dangerous side effects (like barfing or, you know, A FREAKING COMA), the combination seriously impairs judgement, which speaks volumes in this specific case. Just don't mix the two ever, please. Promise, y'all? OK, good. I cannot handle another Shartmander ever again.
