Ready for a trip down the rabbit hole? Then step aboard a caterpillar for a ride on the Alice in Wonderland attraction at Disneyland.

Based on the 1951 animated movie of the same name produced by Walt Disney, the attraction is boarded outside in a fanciful garden setting, right next to the Mad Tea Party attraction.

Your ride is the back of a caterpillar. After boarding, your journey starts up a small rise as you follow footprints left on the route by the White Rabbit. As you enter a tunnel, Alice’s voice is heard saying, “All of a sudden, I fell. Down, down, down.” A door blocks our path, but the doorknob actually starts talking to you.

Why You Should Go Down That Rabbit Hole

The first thing seen in Wonderland is Alice in a meadow chasing after the White Rabbit, then you go around a corner, where Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum tell you he went this way and that way.

After a brief glimpse of the White Rabbit, claiming he’s late for a very important date, it’s time to enter a magical garden where the flowers all sing “A Golden Afternoon, ” a song right out of the Disney animated movie “Alice in Wonderland.”

In the garden is the animated Caterpillar from the movie asking “Who R U?” as he blows smoke rings shaped like the letters.

The Cheshire Cat makes several appearances to try to guide you, but then he’s not all there half the time; he even says so – smiling the whole time.

From there, it’s into the Queen of Hearts’ Rose Garden, where the Guards, who are shaped like playing cards, are singing and “Painting the Roses Red.”

Several of the animated card Guards try to stop you, but you and your caterpillar escape out a tunnel through a door back into the exterior of the building and onto a large twisting vine in the garden.

This scene has Alice, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the White Rabbit and other characters at a tea party celebrating a very “Merry Unbirthday.”

This classic Disneyland dark ride attraction has gone through a few changes over the years. It first opened in 1958, and was an immediate hit. It received a major makeover in 1984, one year after the Mad Tea Party ride was moved next door during the 1983 Fantasyland refurbishment. In 2014, the attraction went through another makeover to bring it up to current safety standards and added several effects throughout.

Throughout all those changes, several things have remained consistent, such as riding aboard the caterpillar, the Queen of Hearts yelling “Off with their heads” and the trip down the serpentine vine, though the last of those changed somewhat in 2014 when the track was widened to accommodate current Cal-OSHA safety rules.

Some lament that change, and I count myself among them – but I also understand the need to stay consistent with modern safety standards. For a while, after the safety problem was realized in 2010, the attraction had some rather unsightly (by Disneyland standards) tarps around the vine, and handrails welded along the top of the vine to prevent falls in case anyone had to be walked out of the ride. Fortunately, the Imagineers were allowed to work their magic and truly make it a wondrous trip through Wonderland again.

I particularly like the garden, where many of the flowers are fully animated while singing, thanks to that technology. Other enhancements include when we first see Alice, the Cheshire Cat and the finale scene.

Take

Kids and adults are always lined up for a ride into Wonderland, and I find myself frequently jumping on for a ride. One of the reasons might be that this attraction exists only here, not at any other Disney theme park.

If I have one complaint it’s that during parades, the sound of the parade can overpower the audio in the tunnel when you first enter Wonderland.

During that period of the tarps and welded-on handrails I would have downgraded the ride to a letter grade of C. But with all the new magical effects and beautiful garden, I give it a letter grade of A minus.
