Many resorted to DIY or self-tattoos in the absence of studios/artistes in the lockdown, while others chose to flock studios post the unlock phase.

Celebrity tattoo artiste and founder of BodyCanvas Tattoo Art, Vikas Malani, tells us, “While spending months indoors, people were coping with new challenges and pain. They had ample time to reflect, and fulfill their long-time desires like fitness, yoga, painting, and of course, getting inked. Many of my clients have utilised the time to think of some unique tattoo ideas.”

Vikas’ studio has at least five customers coming in on a daily basis. Most prefer spiritual themes, graphic designs, and tattoos related to quarantine. “Quotes like ‘This too shall pass’, ‘Keep rocking, ’ etc - that are relevant to Corona times - are a hit among the millennials, ” says Vikas.
As soon as the lockdown eased off, Hitesh Jain, 28, booked an appointment with a tattoo studio, and got the words ‘stop coronavirus’ inked on his arm. “I always wanted my first tattoo to be special, but the pandemic changed my perception and after much thought, I got the virus designed on my arm. This will be a reminder of the times we are living in, ” says Hitesh.
“Tattoos are oftentimes linked to self-expression and deeper meaning. We do things to remind ourselves of our strengths and resilience, and getting a tattoo is just another form of that, ” says mental health counselor Dr Shainna Ali from Orlando on the pandemic body art trend.

For Sunaina Jindal, 19, getting a tattoo of a caged girl was all about the time she spent in isolation during the lockdown. “I was confined to my apartment for months, and the period will always remain etched in my memory. So, I thought that might as well give it a form and shape on my body, ” says the 12th grader.
Celebrity tattoo artiste and founder of Devilz Tattooz, Lokesh Verma, asserts many people have been influenced by celebrities, who have either inked themselves or gotten a tattoo amid the pandemic.
“Apart from self-expression, and a memory of the pandemic that changed our world forever, people need something to divert their minds from the grim situation. Besides, motivational quotes, calligraphy tattoos are in demand because people need hope and positivity and they are getting it in the form of body art, ” points out Lokesh, adding, One of my clients, who came back from overseas, was quarantined for a while. He got a tattoo of the stamp of his quarantine completion and his negative COVID-19 test result.
